Online medical consultations in Europe and beyond

Video consultations with UMC doctors from Lisbon and Porto, wherever you are. Same price as an in-person visit, covered by insurance.

At United Medical Clinic (UMC), you can consult a doctor by video wherever you are: in Porto, in Lisbon, elsewhere in Portugal, or abroad. An online consultation costs the same as an in-person one: €95 with a general practitioner, pediatrician, or psychologist, and €120 with a specialist. Our doctors from Lisbon and Porto consult online in English, Portuguese, and several other languages, and see adults and children of any age. General practitioners and pediatricians are usually available every day, and specialists within the week. We work with all Portuguese and international insurance providers, and online consultations are covered too.

When an Online Consultation Is a Good Choice

  • you live in Porto or elsewhere in the north and need a specialist who sees patients in person only in Lisbon;
  • you live elsewhere in Portugal or abroad and want a doctor who speaks your language;
  • you have new symptoms and want to understand what to do next;
  • you need to review test results, scans, or another doctor's report;
  • you need a referral for tests or imaging;
  • you want a second opinion or a follow-up after treatment;
  • you want to consult a pediatrician without bringing your child to the clinic.

Call 112 if you have chest pain, difficulty breathing, signs of a stroke, heavy bleeding, a serious injury, or a sudden severe deterioration. These situations need emergency care, not an online consultation.

Lisbon Specialists for Patients in Porto

Some of our specialists see patients in person only in Lisbon: in urology, cardiology, rheumatology, pulmonology, gastroenterology, allergology, chronic pain, and surgery. If you live in Porto, you can start with an online consultation and travel to Lisbon only if you need an examination or a procedure. It also works the other way: from Lisbon, you can consult our child psychiatrist or adult psychologist from Porto online.

Which Specialists Consult Online

Each doctor's profile shows whether they consult online and in which languages. Our doctors consult in English, Portuguese, Spanish, French, Italian, German, Russian, and Ukrainian.

What You Can Get From an Online Consultation

  • an assessment of your symptoms and a treatment plan;
  • a review of test results, scans, and reports from other doctors;
  • referrals for laboratory tests and imaging;
  • an electronic prescription, if the doctor considers treatment appropriate;
  • a medical report and medical certificates, if the doctor considers them medically justified;
  • a second opinion;
  • a follow-up after an in-person visit or treatment.

If the doctor needs to examine you, do a test, or perform a procedure, they will suggest an in-person visit at our clinic in Lisbon or Porto.

Prescriptions and Medical Documents

If the doctor decides that treatment is appropriate, you receive an electronic prescription. It can be used in pharmacies anywhere in Portugal. If you have a Portuguese número de utente, the state covers part of the cost of some medicines, so you pay less at the pharmacy.

If you are in another EU country, the doctor can issue a prescription in the European format, which is recognised by pharmacies in other EU countries. Whether a specific medicine is available depends on the country. Outside the EU, a Portuguese prescription usually cannot be used in local pharmacies, and the doctor will advise you on how to continue treatment where you are.

The doctor can also issue a medical report, referrals for tests and imaging, and medical certificates, including for work or school, when they are medically justified. You receive all documents electronically.

How It Works

  1. Book online on the website, via WhatsApp or Telegram, or by phone. Choose an online consultation and give us an email address you check regularly.
  2. The link to the consultation is not sent in advance. At the appointment time, when the doctor opens your record and starts the consultation, you automatically receive an email with the link. A few minutes before the appointment, open your inbox and check the spam folder too.
  3. The consultation takes place by video on a secure medical platform and lasts as long as an in-person visit. You need a phone or computer with a camera, a microphone, and a stable internet connection.
  4. Have your test results, previous reports, and a list of the medicines you take at hand.
  5. After the consultation, you receive the doctor's recommendations and any documents electronically.

Your personal and medical data are protected in line with European data protection rules.

Online Consultations for Children

Our pediatricians consult online for children of any age, from newborns to teenagers. The consultation takes place with a parent. It is convenient for questions about feeding, development, rashes, colds, or test results, and the pediatrician will tell you if your child needs to be seen in person in Lisbon or Porto.

If You Are Outside Portugal

We consult patients wherever they are: in other EU countries, the United Kingdom, the United States, and elsewhere. Many of our patients are expats and international residents who want to keep seeing a doctor they know, in their own language.
