ENT Care for Children
All our ENT doctors see children from birth. Dr. Ramada in Porto focuses on pediatric ENT, including airway problems. Common reasons for a child's visit:
- recurring ear infections and fluid in the middle ear (glue ear);
- enlarged adenoids, mouth breathing, and a constantly stuffy or runny nose;
- snoring and pauses in breathing during sleep;
- frequent sore throats and enlarged tonsils;
- hearing loss or a child not responding to sounds;
- noisy breathing (stridor);
- a foreign object in the ear or nose;
- a second opinion before adenoid or tonsil surgery.
In Lisbon, an ultra-thin flexible endoscope can be used to examine the adenoids even in babies a few months old. Unlike an X-ray, it involves no radiation and shows how much the adenoids block the airway.
Endoscopy and Procedures During the Visit
- Digital video endoscopy (Lisbon): a flexible ultra-thin endoscope passed through the nose shows the nasal cavity, nasopharynx, adenoids, larynx, and vocal cords on screen. It takes a few minutes, needs no preparation, and is used in adults and in children from the first months of life. A consultation with video endoscopy costs €140.
- Rigid nasal endoscopy and video otoscopy (Lisbon): a detailed view of the nasal cavity and sinus openings, and of the ear canal and eardrum.
- Earwax removal (Lisbon and Porto) and ear irrigation (Lisbon).
- Tonsil lavage for chronic tonsillitis and tonsil stones, including vacuum lavage (Lisbon).
- Nasal sinus irrigation using the displacement method (Lisbon).
Hearing tests (audiometry) are not performed at UMC: when needed, the doctor refers you and then reviews the results with you. If surgery such as removal of the adenoids or tonsils is indicated, the doctor explains the options and arranges a referral.
