Biographical summary

Filipa Passos is a licensed obstetrician-gynecologist with extensive clinical and surgical experience. She holds consultant grade in Obstetrics and Gynecology and specializes in minimally invasive gynecologic surgery, hysteroscopy, and laparoscopy.

At United Medical Clinic in Lisbon, Dr. Passos sees patients age 11 and older, performs gynecologic evaluations, develops diagnostic and treatment plans, and helps determine whether conservative management or a surgical consultation is appropriate.

Her professional training encompasses general gynecology, obstetrics, endoscopic gynecologic surgery, and the instruction of physicians in laparoscopic techniques.

Reasons to See an Obstetrician-Gynecologist

Patients may schedule an appointment for preventive care, new symptoms, follow-up of a previously diagnosed condition, or a specialist opinion regarding possible surgical treatment.

  • irregular, painful, heavy, or absent menstrual periods;
  • lower abdominal or pelvic pain and discomfort;
  • uterine fibroids;
  • endometrial polyps;
  • endometriosis;
  • ovarian cysts and other ovarian lesions;
  • polycystic ovary syndrome;
  • unusual discharge, itching, burning, or odor;
  • sexually transmitted infections;
  • contraception questions;
  • perimenopause and menopause symptoms;
  • pregnancy planning and prenatal care;
  • a second opinion before gynecologic surgery.

Recommendations are individualized after the consultation. The same symptom may have different causes, so testing and treatment are selected based on the patient's history and examination findings.

Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery

Dr. Passos's principal area of differentiation is endoscopic gynecologic surgery. Her confirmed areas of expertise include:

  • laparoscopic hysterectomy — removal of the uterus through small surgical incisions;
  • laparoscopic myomectomy — removal of uterine fibroids while preserving the uterus;
  • laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy — removal of an ovarian cyst while preserving healthy tissue when possible;
  • hysteroscopic polypectomy — removal of polyps from the uterine cavity;
  • hysteroscopic myomectomy — removal of suitable submucosal fibroids through the uterine cavity.

According to her CV, by February 2026 Dr. Passos had performed 304 hysteroscopies and 321 laparoscopies at CUF as the primary surgeon. She previously coordinated the Ambulatory Surgery area and Hysteroscopy Unit at Hospital Garcia de Orta.

Important: UMC Lisbon is the location for consultations and outpatient diagnostic care. Hysteroscopic and laparoscopic operations are performed at an appropriately equipped hospital. The surgical location, fees, and logistical arrangements are confirmed separately.

Diagnostic and Preventive Care at UMC

During an in-person appointment, Dr. Passos reviews the patient's concerns and medical history, performs a gynecologic examination, and conducts transvaginal ultrasound when clinically indicated. At UMC, the gynecologist performs the ultrasound during the appointment.

UMC also provides sample collection for liquid-based cytology and HPV testing, laboratory testing for infections, and other services listed by the Gynecology department. The need for each test or procedure is discussed before it is performed.

When clinically indicated and arranged in advance, the following additional diagnostic, preventive, and therapeutic services may be completed during the same visit:

  • gynecologic ultrasound, including transvaginal ultrasound;
  • sample collection for liquid-based cytology and HPV testing;
  • gynecologic swabs and sample collection for laboratory testing for infections;
  • HPV vaccination, including Gardasil 9;
  • intrauterine device insertion or removal;
  • contraceptive implant insertion or removal.

These tests and procedures are not automatically included in the consultation fee. They are registered and billed as separate services. Before proceeding, the physician explains the medical indication, and the price should be confirmed with the clinic administrator.

Patients may find it helpful to bring previous Pap and HPV test results, ultrasound reports, surgical records, and a current medication list when these are available.

Obstetrics and Women's Health Across Life Stages

As a specialist in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Dr. Passos provides consultations for pregnancy planning and prenatal care. Her professional experience includes vaginal and operative deliveries, cesarean delivery, and the management of obstetric emergencies.

She also sees adolescent patients and provides care related to menstrual health, contraception, perimenopause, and menopause. The evaluation plan is tailored to the patient's age, symptoms, reproductive goals, and medical history.

UMC provides pregnancy follow-up; however, fetal screening ultrasounds are not performed at the clinic. When needed, the physician refers the patient to an appropriate diagnostic center.
